The value of transformational learning experiences at AULearn More About This Topic
American University is dedicated to helping students develop the passion, ambition, and courage necessary to tackle the world’s most complex challenges. Beyond-the-classroom experiences are integral to an AU education and vital to preparing students as future changemakers.
Change Can’t Wait: The Campaign for American University is reimagining student support, with $175 million of our $500 million goal dedicated to transformative educational opportunities, including student scholarships and experiential learning. Cost is often a barrier associated with providing equitable access to experiential learning through research, internships, and study abroad programs. AU recognizes these activities set students up for success and need to be available to the widest audience possible.
Undergraduate and graduate research allows students to gain practical skills and training, plus the opportunity to build professional relationships that enhance their careers. At AU, students work alongside field leaders and contribute to groundbreaking faculty research. They also conduct independent research projects and present their work at conferences and events. By investing in research assistantships and independent work, we can nurture, hone, and activate these future innovators.
Internships put knowledge into practice. AU’s Washington, DC location provides an incomparable springboard for career development. But for many students, internships are a luxury rather than an essential experience to prepare them for employment after AU. Some of AU’s most notable fields of study—government and non-profit management—typically provide only unpaid internships, creating situations where students who can afford to intern are at an unfair advantage. Philanthropic support bridges this gap, allowing all students to participate in career-shaping opportunities.
Beyond investment in internships, AU strives to ensure its signature study abroad programs remain within reach for all. Gifts to these learning opportunities let students experience other cultures, recognize their role as global citizens, and develop new viewpoints that encourage personal growth.
With your partnership, every AU student can have the chance to participate in outstanding learning experiences that can transform their lives and careers. Your support can turn today’s students into tomorrow’s changemakers. Contact Seth D. Speyer at 202-885-3411 or speyer@american.edu to learn more. There is no obligation.
